A few weeks ago Vice Captain Zara Juffkins let the ladies team know she had entered and won the Aviva Grassroots Giveaway competition. The ladies knew the club had won £2000 of Gilbert rugby kit and that they had been partnered with premiership team Worcester Warriors for a training session but hadn’t yet been told who would be taking the session.
There was a bit a trepidation when the ladies turned up to see a team of cameras there to record the session, however there were members of the team who would later relish their time in front of the camera (Dee Dee Umotong :’D)
After a quick warm up the ladies were gathered together to meet their coaches for the afternoon: Worcester Warriors and Rugby International players Francois Hougaard, David Denton and Tom Heathcote and leading the session, Women’s England International and Wasp’s player Danielle Waterman!
The session started with a warm up of Rugby netball. Danielle slowly introduced new rules to the game to focus on finding and creating space and improve communication between players.
The team was then split into 3 groups who were partnered with one of the Worcester Warrior players who coached their group through a series of drills focusing further on creating and utilising space through 2 on 1 situations.
It was a surreal moment for Five Ways Ladies Coaches Ian Chaston and Alex Nock to see the Ladies listening to coaches without any “smart” comments being made back!
To finish the session Danielle set a challenge where each team would have to compete in 12 two on one situations to score as many tries as possible. This is where the Worcester Warriors players competitive nature kicked in as they cheered their groups on!
It was an amazing experience for all the ladies who took part. It was also a great way to round off a successful season that has reaped the benefits of recruitment.
Thank you to Francois Hougaard, David Denton, Tom Heathcote and Danielle Waterman for coaching the session, to the Aviva Grassroots competition organisers and to Zara for entering on behalf of the team!
